Our Program
Community HOPE is a non-profit, community-based organization that offers academic, individualized mentoring for children living in affordable housing communities in the city of Raleigh. Our program offers structured mentoring for students in kindergarten through high school. We use a nationally renowned curriculum called HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) that has been in existence for almost 30 years and is used in over 40 states throughout the country. HOSTS, because of its measurable results, has been primarily implemented in school systems across the U.S. However, we, in partnership with identified communities and the Triangle YMCA, have implemented this program right in the students’ communities versus their schools.
Our program far exceeds the results of other tutorial programs and homework help because it is prescriptive for each individual child, providing a comprehensive and diagnostic analysis of each child’s reading and critical thinking skills. Each child is diagnostically tested to obtain the grade level at which they are currently reading and to decipher “the roots” of the problems they are experiencing. From these testing results, a folder is designed two days a week for each child, which includes 3 parts: Literature and Literacy Development, Vocabulary and Writing Development, and Objective Reinforcement. The child then works through this folder after school with their mentor. The program pairs each child with 2 adult mentors who meet with the student each week for an entire school year to help them achieve success in the areas needed. Our mentors are motivated and well-trained to work with and aid the student in literacy improvement.
Community HOPE also offers community development tools through parent leadership teams, annual workshops, mentor training curriculums, and high school curriculums for exploration of colleges and careers. We also strive to build solid, working partnerships with local churches of varying denominations and races to support the work and success of the program. Community HOPE also works with other community organizations who are interested in starting their own Community HOPE sites.
